to the poster looking to move to Seattle, race relations aren't much better here. i moved here from the midwest thinking it would be more progressive, it's not. the problem is that there aren't many people of color here, so at times you will be the first brown face people have seen. however if your an Asian female, this is your heaven.

Wow that is very dissapointing. I heard from a couple of people how much better it was. It was the main thing that made me come to the conclusion that I wanted to relocate there. I figured if I am going to move away I may as well move somewhere where race relations are alot better because I am tired of how bad it is here. I am at the point of wanting to start cursing people out. I was called a jerk by this white guy while I was going into Barnes and Noble the other day, I don't even know what I did. I just stood there looking because I did not even know what the hell happened. Once I snapped out of it. I wanted to find a brick and bust his damn head with it. I mean he had the angirest look on his face. I wonder if I had said something back what would have happened? He might have just been crazyand its better to avoid crazy in all colors. That is why I do not need a gun.

ANyway to the poster who gave me the info on Seattle, thank you.

Wanting to preserve his heritage? Well, it's too late. Look at Europe. Europe has been a melting pot, especially Southern and Eastern Europeans that immigrated in this country in the early 20th century. They have Black, Arabic, and Asian ancestry.

It's really interesting because people thought that my oldest son was White when he was an infant and that I was the nanny. When he would be out with his Father, no one ever questioned who the parent was. They just saw a White man and his White son out together. But, Hispanic women used to come up to him and make a huge fuss and talk to him in Spanish and ask me if the father was Mexican, Cuban or Puerto Rican. I often wonder if my sons decide to identify as White, would I take it as a sign of rejection?? It would be their choice, although society would never see them as White. It's a very interesting subject...

Race is a social construct. It is interesting that the favoring of light skin coloring over dark skin coloring shows up in other parts of the world and among other races as well. My father served in Vietnam and Korea, and was quite familiar with Asian cultures, and said that among Asians there was this color prejudice. Chinese and Japanese, were the fairest, were from the northern climes and considered themselves superior to Cambodians (who the Vietnamese called mud people), because of their darker skin. There used to be prejudice against darker skinned Sicilians from northern Italians with fairer skin and more northern European looks. Given that this phenomena exists in other cultures, among other tribes or indigenous peoples, I wonder- where does this come from? We know that in this country it was slavery, miscegenation, Jim Crow, the one drop rule, all of those cultural and societal factors that underlie white fear of being perceived as having any "black blood." But I wonder, what accounts for this prejudice among other peoples?

It should be OBVIOUS that the "CONCEPT OF WHITENESS" IS EVIDENCE THAT RACISM IN THE AMERICAS IS AN IRRATIONAL CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM DESIGNED TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST BLACK/AFRICAN ANCESTRY. Everyone who HATES THIS BRAND OF RACISM should REJECT THE NOTION THAT HAVING BLACK BLOOD IS SHAMEFUL/BAD/WRONG and that HAVING WHITE/NON-BLACK BLOOD IS SUPERIOR. If ALL OF US respected the right of EACH INDIVIDUAL to acknowledge their FULL RACIAL IDENTITY without PLACING AN ANTI-BLACK RACIST JUDGEMENT ON IT, then maybe our society could begin to get past the IRRATIONAL EVIL OF ANTI-BLACK RACISM.

I think people just view race differently. Some white people think that they are pure and therefore view everything else that is different as not being pure.

I'm a somewhat light skinned black young woman and when I was a baby, I looked like I was mixed. My dad is very dark skinned and my mom is light skinned so of course whenever she took me out somewhere, people would ask her if I was mixed. I wasn't of course, but that just goes to show you. One time a lady commented that I looked Chinese...if that's saying anything. I still get questions from time to time about being mixed. I'm not, but still.
