I choose running my hands through sweet smelling naps any day over getting them stuck in weave braids..that's if you let me run my fingers through it at all.

Re: Siditty: Black Women, Color Contacts, Hair Dye, and Weave

Sillyme202020:
You said something about white people dying their hair and wearing lenses. Of course, for them too, this is not natural, but there is one BIG difference with black people: it could have been naturel, these colors belong to their peoples. Whereas an African American person is unlikely to have hair and eyes of another color than black.
Yes, there is hidden self-hate, since the media make us think that beauty is white (how stupid!). Therefore, we see many famous black persons trying to whien themselves. Take a look at Beyonce, with her fake blond hair. What the f** is she doing? Telling her many young fans that black can't be beautiful?

Re: Siditty: Black Women, Color Contacts, Hair Dye, and Weave

Hello everyone,

I am a black woman as well. I have never worn contacts but I do like them. However, I am a fan of weave. I love weave because its very versatile and i am trying to grow my hair out without chemicals. A simple swipe over the top with a flat iron every now and then is all i need to blend my hair with the weave. . I have had short pixie cuts and I've had my hair mid waist as well( my real hair) I didn't have any complications growing up in life or racial problems. I've had friends from everywhere but I know who I am. Weave doesn't make or break me but it is my choice to wear it and I love a beautiful weave. I believe people should learn to accept who they are. Once you know who you are no man or woman under the sun will be able to tear you down. People continuously judge black people because society had taught them to judge black people. Some black people flock to things because they want to be accepted, but some of us have simple reasons like "just because I like it" or" trying to grow it out" which is my case. My natural hair is very thin, and I couldn't do half of the styles I wear now, if I was just wearing my natural hair. I agree with a lot of the previous posts, there are serious issues out there in the world to attend to, however weave and contacts probably aren't that high on the list .(lol)

Take care!

Re: Siditty: Black Women, Color Contacts, Hair Dye, and Weave

If she continues like that she will end up wearing a permanent wig

Re: Siditty: Black Women, Color Contacts, Hair Dye, and Weave

I agree with Sillyme202020. Like tyra banks said. its about having the right to choose. its about options..i loooove my real hair its fab but I looove the fact that tomorow I can clip in some extentions and have a completely different look. I like to keep ppl guessin and experiment..its fun...lighten up. Its is so superficial to put so much effort into talking about this anyway. Just bcuz something is not your style does not mean it wrong or beneath you. us black women and Women in general need to learn to uplift one another and celebrate eachother instead of finding fault with everything the next woman does...like I said you need to lighten up hun.

Re: Siditty: Black Women, Color Contacts, Hair Dye, and Weave

People have their own personal reasons for doing things, Siddity. I'm a proud African woman myself and have long waist-length hair, which I was able to grow out simply by using weaves for a few years. It's not an issue of self hate or low self-esteem, but simply one of practicality. You and many other people like you need to stop being so judgmental. Focus on the real issues in the world, not the use of weaves and/or colored contacts by black people. For your information, I know a lot of white people who use both weaves/extensions and colored contacts. Does the idea of self hate apply to them as well?

Re: Siditty: Black Women, Color Contacts, Hair Dye, and Weave

SO WHAT!!! white women do it, Asian women do it, Latino women do it! Whether or not we would like to admit it, it is often an issue of self-hatred. I'm not going to say always--because there are people like my friend who just wear weaves because they are too lazy to take care of their hair (her words, lol)--but often it does play a role in the choice.
If self-hatred were not a major reason, then why do the majority of black women do some sort of alteration to their hair? If it were merely one option among many, wouldn't there be more people wearing their hair natural? And wouldn't those people who were natural be left alone instead of receiving comments from other black women about their hair being nappy (this has happened to me quite a bit since I decided to go natural last year)? Then there is that argument about natural hair being hard to manage...psssh. While I do know that people in other races with curly hair straighten their hair and get chemical straighteners, I know a lot more of these people from other races than in my own who have devised ways to take care of their hair, knowing that it doesn't respond as well to the sulfate shampoo and comb as straight hair does. Why isn't that the case for more black women (as in, why don't we educate ourselves on taking care of our natural hair)?

I'm not discounting the other reasons for wanting to wear colored contacts or weaves. I'm just agreeing with Siditty that self-hatred is a reason, if not a major one. I can't even be high and mighty about it, because until about four years ago, it was the reason for me too.

Re: Siditty: Black Women, Color Contacts, Hair Dye, and Weave

huh.... if makes someone happy OR they just simply want to try something then new why should it bother the next person....DON'T LIKE DON'T LOOK!!! That's wayy too much heat and will quickly damage your own hair. Now if they worked out with a weave who cares? The weave will dry straight after being drenched with sweat. There's no one reason for getting a weave. It's nice to give your hair a break for awhile so what? No one should be judged jus because they were born with long straight hair and want curly short hair or curly long hair for a couple months, they should do and get whatever they want!! I have been through all of the stages of the hair weave thing. I will say this white women wear more of it then any other race and no one says anything. Actually when they wear it they are put in the spotlight and it is so cute. I will admit I am a artist and I consider it art. Being able to alter your appearance be attaching or extending something to your body is the oldest form of art. Study history. I wore a afro for 3 years straight and I wanted a different look so I tried weave. It is all about a look. Hair is a fashion now and basically always been people have been wearing wigs for ages. Now since black women have been wearing it we are considered fake. That is intriges me. I want to see people make comment about white women and their fake stuff. The reality show "Wives of Orange County" all those women are fake and they do not get put down. What baffles me about black men is they will say nasty comments about black women and fake hair. But will be fascinated by fake boobs on white women. To sum it up in America is fake we eat fake food and that is worst then what you put on. So what is better fake food or fake hair. Besides who are men to tell us what to wear. Let's talk about what men are wearing. Why so much beating on black women. We still have not escaped the Willie Lynch Theory.

Re: Siditty: Black Women, Color Contacts, Hair Dye, and Weave

I for one wear weaves and wigs because, i love the versatility it gives me with styling. i can change my look as and when i feel like. Lil Kim is trying to be Barbie or Pamela Anderson.

----------

I will say this white women wear more of it then any other race and no one says anything. Actually when they wear it they are put in the spotlight and it is so cute. I

I don't think weave and peroxide blonde hair is cute on white women either.

What baffles me about black men is they will say nasty comments about black women and fake hair. But will be fascinated by fake boobs on white women.

I am not a man.

-----------

Sidditty I assume you are a man so I guess you thing we black women hate ourselves. I wear weave and I did not hate myself. I like the variety of hair styles I can wear. So I do not need a man telling me what to wear. I understand concepts that have been placed in our society about beauty but there are fashion statement. Well that is all you men are going to think what you want. I am pretty sure all races of men make comments about their women. I am liberated from what men think.

I am a woman who is married to a man and I am very happy you are liberated from what men think.

Re: Siditty: Black Women, Color Contacts, Hair Dye, and Weave

Sidditty I assume you are a man so I guess you thing we black women hate ourselves.
